Accessible Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles have the potential to be designed to increase the mobility of those who have physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. We are working to develop new design ideas for how to make autonomous cars best serve those with disabilities. To develop new solutions, we are working with members of the disability community and transportation advocates to understand people's mobility needs, current challenges, and hopes for the future. Specifically, I was interested in conducting user research, speaking to individuals with a range of disabilities and designing prototypes and wireframes to accommodate their pain points. After drafting a discussion guide and reaching out to users, I led a team of students in conducting interviews, and collaborated with designers on the team to build and iterate on designs that addressed the insights we discovered. This project gave me invaluable insight into being the leader my own user research project, with all of the project management skills and iteration that comes with it. I am thrilled to be returning in the fall to continue with the project.
